Library Resources for Distance Learners

Frequently Asked Questions

Welcome to the Rogue Community College Library. We recognize that as a distance learner enrolled in either a televised or web-based course, you have special needs with regard to accessing library materials.   Below you will find answers to a list of frequently asked questions about library services. For a more complete picture of the wide variety of resources available to you, please go to the RCC Library homepage and browse at your leisure.

Why do I need a library card?

You will need to have a SOLIS library card to check out books, tapes or CD's from any of the member libraries in the SOLIS consortium.  A library card and password enable you to request materials from SOLIS libraries. In addition, your library card number is also your Patron ID to access EBSCOhost from remote locations via the Internet connection.

How do I get a library card?

Stop by the circulation desk at the SOLIS branch library most convenient to you.  Please bring photo ID and proof of your current mailing address.  Your drivers license will be sufficient for both of these requirements if it shows your current address. You choose your password when applying for your library card.

How do I get a library card password?

If you currently have a library card from RCC, Jackson County, or Josephine County go to the circulation desk at the branch library most convenient to you to request a password.

How do I check books out?

Once you have located library materials within the SOLIS system and requested that they be sent to the branch library most convenient to you, you will be notified by phone or mail when they arrive.  Go to the circulation desk of the branch library holding your materials. Inform them that you have holds to pick up and give them your library card.

How do I find the SOLIS library nearest to me?

The SOLIS consortium of libraries is made up of the RCC Library system as well as the Jackson County and Josephine County Library systems.  22 library branch locations are available to you.  Please follow the appropriate link below to locate the library nearest to you.

What libraries other than SOLIS libraries will accept my library card?

In addition to having borrowing privileges at any of the 22 locations within the SOLIS system, your card can also be used at the following college libraries.  You will be required to provide I.D. with proof of mailing address when checking materials out at these libraries.

OIT - Oregon Institute of Technology Library
UCC - Umpqua Community College Library

Can I borrow books from Southern Oregon University?

Yes, RCC students enrolled in at least a one credit class have checkout privileges at SOU. Access the SOU library catalog to place book material on hold for delivery to Redwood or Riverside Campus. Books circulate for a 2 week loan period and may be renewed (if no holds are pending) in person, by phone or online. Photo ID and proof of mailing address will be required if using the SOU library in person. http://lib.sou.edu/screens/opacmenu.html

How do I search for magazine articles?

Several periodical databases are available to you through the RCC Library homepage.  The primary resource for periodicals is EBSCOhost.  This is a collection of databases indexing articles in over 2700 journals, as well as the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal. Abstracts are provided for all articles, and the complete articles are available online for approximately 1800 of the journals. As an RCC student, you have access to this database from home as well as on campus.  Please follow this link to access EBSCOhost.  Your Patron I.D. is your library card number.

What do I do if I have a reference question?

We have well trained, knowledgeable staff to help guide you through the research process.  Assistance is available to you in person at the RCC libraries located on the Redwood Campus in Grants Pass and the Riverside Campus in Medford.  We will also be happy respond to your questions by phone or e-mail.  The number for the reference desk on the Riverside Campus is (541) 245-7522.  For the Redwood Campus, please dial (541) 956-7153.  If you prefer to use e-mail, please contact us at: libraryref@roguecc.edu

Reserve Room

Campus libraries provide a Reserve Room for instructors' materials. The Reserve Room contains a collection of textbooks and other materials placed in the library by the instructors for the use of their students. All telecourse materials are available from the Reserve Room.

Instructor will determine the conditions for the loan. The loan period is typically two hours, but other time allotments may be designated -- even up to three months. Telecourse materials are limited to in library use only.

Late returns incur fines. The charge varies with the type of loan. Be sure to ask when the item is due. You are responsible for the item until it is returned.

The Reserve Room is open during the library hours.

Contact the Circulation Desk for further information.
